Sad, Minister Karding Says 65% of Indonesian Migrant Workers Have Illegal Status
JAKARTA, iNews.id – Minister of Protection Migrant Workers Indonesia (P2MI), Abdul Kadir Karding said as much as 65% of 15 million Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) has illegal and non-procedural status. A number of improvement strategies were implemented.
“If the number of migrant workers we have recorded throughout Indonesia is 15 million, 15 million,” said Minister Karding at the Ministry of Social Affairs Office, Jakarta, Friday (1/11/2024).

Karding also admitted that overcoming the problem of illegal and non-procedural PMI is not an easy job. “Regarding illegality, this is indeed difficult. It's difficult but that doesn't mean we can't overcome it. Existing data shows that around 65 percent of migrant workers are illegal or non-procedural,” he said.
Even so, Karding emphasized that even if PMI have problems being repatriated from their destination country back to Indonesia, according to the law they must be taken care of by the state.

“65 percent of these, if something happens abroad after returning home, they run to us. Because the law must ensure that it must be handled. It doesn't matter whether it is procedural or not procedural,” he explained.
