NEW YORK, iNews.id – The United States (US) nuclear regulator or NRC begins the process to consider Constellation Energy's plans to restart nuclear power plants (NPP) Three Mile Island which is no longer in operation. This plan was made known at the inaugural general meeting which was held on Friday (25/10/2024).

Constellation announced last month that it had signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Microsoft that would allow the reopening of the Unit 1 reactor at Three Mile Island. The company immediately submitted an application to restore the nuclear power plant's operating license.

Launch Reutersthe company is also working to extend the life of the plant and change its name to Crane Clean Energy Center.

Three Mile Island, located in Pennsylvania on an island in the Susquehanna River, is known for the partial meltdown of its Unit 2 reactor in 1979. The unit has been permanently closed and is currently inactive.

NRC members requested information about emergency contingency plans for factory restarts and information about commercial agreements with Microsoft. In addition, the NRC encourages Constellation to move quickly regarding permits for air use for the nuclear power plant.

The NRC also raised questions about how the resumption of Unit 1 would intersect with the operational cessation of Unit 2, which began last year, nearly 45 years after its partial destruction.

Utah-based nuclear services company EnergySolutions owns Unit 2 and related infrastructure, while Constellation owns Unit 1 and land on the site.

For information, Unit 1 was closed for economic reasons in 2019, around 15 years before its operating permit expired. At the time, Constellation said it did not anticipate resuming operations.
